Editing/Viewing attachments (mainly Word and Excel) directly on server without the need to download locally

Hello,

I am investigating a possibility of allowing somehow editing and viewing of attachments without the need to download and reupload them locally. I would like for Odoo to replace any local storage and save users from need to download/upload the files. DMS module comes to mind as a good base for orgnaizing that. I can see multiple building blocks for this but I am interested if anyone has taken this idea any further. Some of the possible building blocks could be:

I was able to access demo of Odoo 14.0 Enterprise with new possibility to create "live" spreadsheets. Don't know how that is done (is it 14.0's module google_spreadsheets?) but that won't allow for opening your own Excel nor Word files :-(

Has anyone attempted anything like this succesfully? Can you give any pointers please? Thank you

Best regards

    Dear,

That’s true. You need to build your own Nextcloud / Alfresco… Not simple.. And then you have to maintain that… with some changes in the Python CMIS library so now and then, and with changes in basic models of Odoo each year ( even after 14 versions, Odoo seems still not to know how a customer, product, invoice, sales or accounting line object must be, so Odoo keep on changing these, want is a big pain ! ). Success ! We have worked a year on a solution and stopped the project because the result was not what we had hoped… )

    With kind regards,

Looking for alternatives I found these 2 articles that summarize exactly what I would need:

    https://mikekaganski.wordpress.com/2016/10/29/first-blog-post/

    https://mikekaganski.wordpress.com/2016/11/20/integrating-libreoffice-with-sharepoint-part-2/

So the alternatives (protocol - wise) that I can see are (talking about editing in desktop version of LibreOffice / MS Office):

    • WebDAV

    • CMIS

I have been looking for WebDAV already and mentioned it in initial email. Looking for CMIS I found this: https://github.com/OCA/connector-cmis

However that is for integration with external CMIS server such as Alfresco. So I would need to implement CMIS server as Odoo module to achieve what I want. Will research that.

    Best regards

    Dear,

The Alfresco solution is also a possibility. Alfresco is much more powerful the Nextcloud, but also much more complicated… And I like the Nextcloud Odoo module, because in Odoo, the basics remain completely as without. The attachments are present as usual in Odoo. You can use Nextcloud to work with the attachments and to create or kill new ones. You can use the attachment mechanism of Odoo as normally too. You can even choose with models have a Nextcloud map structure and with not ( for some smaller models with few static attachments, you may not need another mechanism ).  In the Alfresco module, there is an extra tab for the Alfresco connection.

But when you need the advanced Alfresco possibilities, of course Alfresco is a great solution.

Will have a look. While researching this I found many mentions of Alfresco

implementing required subset of SharePoint services which I thought could be

used as a base for something like this.

    Thank you. Best regards

Is this what they use for "live" spreadsheets in 14.0? I wonder why they
didn't allow for editing other xls/xlsx/... files.

This would certainly be an option for "simpler" files. I can imagine more
complicated files. Also Word/Writer and PowerPoint/Impress files remains...

    But great point. Thank you.

    Hi all,

Odoo resolve this question with an external repo https://github.com/myliang/x-spreadsheet (odoo forked it)
Nothing prevent to do the same (no copy odoo code) just using x-spreadsheet code

  • Re: Editing/Viewing attachments (mainly Word and Excel) directly on server without the need to download locally

Looking for alternatives I found these 2 articles that summarize exactly what I would need:

    https://mikekaganski.wordpress.com/2016/10/29/first-blog-post/

    https://mikekaganski.wordpress.com/2016/11/20/integrating-libreoffice-with-sharepoint-part-2/

So the alternatives (protocol - wise) that I can see are (talking about editing in desktop version of LibreOffice / MS Office):

    • WebDAV
    • CMIS

I have been looking for WebDAV already and mentioned it in initial email. Looking for CMIS I found this: https://github.com/OCA/connector-cmis

However that is for integration with external CMIS server such as Alfresco. So I would need to implement CMIS server as Odoo module to achieve what I want. Will research that.

    Best regards

    Radovan
