This very much how the core packages work (model stock.quant.package). Although the workflows for this maybe aren't the most intuitive.

Hi David, thanks for info. I somehow got misleaded with packagings where they say in the docs: "In Odoo, packagings are used for indicative purposes on sales/purchase orders and inventory transfers." Now I see packages and packagings are two different things. Will check them out.
